How it works
Highly controlled flashes of light are selectively absorbed by hairs and their follicles lying below the surface of the skin. The absorbed light heats the hair down to the root, which destroys the re-growth potential of the follicle – all without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Follicles that are actively producing hair growth at the time of treatment can be completely destroyed but dormant follicles will require further treatment sessions. Normally, 5-8 treatment sessions at 4 to 6 weekly intervals, on any particular area, will reduce hair growth by 75% to 85%.

Advantages over laser
The treatment is customised to each client’s requirements. Highly sophisticated IPL computer technology selects the most appropriate wavelength and pulse characteristics to treat a variety of hair and skin colours. Laser, however, can only use 1 wavelength of light and therefore can only treat a small minority of hair and ethnic skin types, with moderate success.

What are the treatments like?
Cooled clear gel is applied to the treatment area and intense pulses of light are transmitted through a glass prism onto the skin.
At every session, a single pulse is delivered to each section of the area to be treated, rendering hundreds of hair follicles immediately useless. This makes the treatment extremely fast. A top lip, for example, usually requires only 8 pulses which takes around 5 minutes in total. Each pulse of light feels like a slight sting or pinch. No local anaesthesia is required and most people tolerate the treatment well.

Hairs in the treated area will continue to appear for 7-30 days post-treatment. This is not new hair growth, but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin.
Following treatment, clients can return to work and resume regular activities immediately. There is no down-time.
Side Effects
Side effects are rare., but a slight reddening or some minor swelling on the treatment site is usual - this typically lasts for 2-24 hours and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs.
Aftercare
Your Aesthetic Practitioner will apply a cooling gel immediately after the treatment. This gel significantly helps to cool and soothe the skin and reduce after-effects. A cooling roller or compress may also be applied, followed by a mineral sunscreen where appropriate.
It is essential to avoid sun exposure and tanning, including fake tan, prior to treatment and between treatments. Hair must also not be plucked or waxed, but can be cut or shaved prior to treatment and between treatments.
